Why should I repeat a Name of God that does not belong to my religion?

When I was first told that repeating Sree Gurudev Datta would help both me and my ancestors (a concept which was quite alien to me), I wondered why I was being asked to repeat the Name of a God (deity) that didn’t belong to my religion.

The answer, I came to know, is quite simple. Everything that God has created has a function. Different deities are different aspects of God with different functions. All those functions emanate a different kind of vibration and due to God’s Grace we are able to imbibe those vibrations as per our needs.

Lord Datta is a deity, universal aspect of God. One of His functions in the Universe is alleviating trouble caused due to the subtle bodies of ancestors. By chanting Lord Datta’s Name (in the form of “Sree Gurudev Datta”) we are able to attract and imbibe divine energy and vibrations emanating from this God principle regardless of our religion, faith, nationality, or cultural background.

The following simple analogy can help us understand the universality of this aspect of God: Panadol (whose chemical formula is C8H9NO2) is an allopathic drug that is manufactured in Australia and other countries as well. It helps to provide relief from symptoms such as fever, headaches and other minor aches or pains. Irrespective of place of manufacture (in this case Australia), Panadol whose chemical formula is universal can be used to treat the symptoms of people not only in Australia but in the entire world.

So, also chanting Lord Datta’s Name can help all of us no matter where we are from.

Throughout my life I felt depressed many times with no particular reason, and there was no way to overcome this state. I sometimes could not concentrate on simple conversations, and would be completely lost. I was told that all this might be happening due to subtle bodies of departed ancestors and I was recommended to chant Lord Datta’s chant for 3 hours throughout the day.

As I was born a Christian I used to chant the Name of Jesus, but my distress caused by departed ancestors was not reducing. Only after I started to chant Lord Datta’s chant I could feel improvement in these aspects of life. I still continue to chant the Name of Lord Datta for 3 hours, and Lord Jesus’ Name for the rest of the time I have during the day. I can assure that this really works wonders and one should take the help of this for overcoming various problems in life.

What an absolutely ridiculous question. Ancestors are the progenitors who have brought us forward and as such they must be revered. This makes more logical sense than worshipping Jesus – a Nazarene who was nailed to a cross. I know my ancestors and I give thanks to them every day for my health, my intelligence and my compassion. Ancestor worship in Africa will never disappear.

Ancestors influence our lives. The question is whether they influence our lives for good or for bad. I do not believe in worshipping our ancestors or seeking spiritual guidance from them, simply because I serve a living ‘God’ and not an ancestral non-living god. The choice is ours today.

Reincarnation

When a person dies the physical body is left behind on earth and the subtle body, i.e. the essence of the person, the consciousness, travels into the subtle world.

Carnate means ‘of Flesh’.

Reincarnate means to ‘re-enter the flesh’.

When a person dies the physical body is left behind on earth and the subtle body, i.e. the essence of the person, the consciousness, travels into the subtle world. Here the subtle body spends a certain time period depending upon the merits and the sins accrued by the person during his lifetime. After that time period, the subtle body is free to be reborn again. It takes birth in a family or environment most suitable to settle some of its karma. This is reincarnation. This happens again and again until such a time that the soul reaches full maturity. After that there is no need for the soul to be born again. This is the natural way in which a soul is meant to progress.

When people have strong attachments towards earthly pleasures, such as fame, money, sex; strong addictions, the subtle body becomes heavy. After death, it becomes very difficult for such subtle bodies to leave earth and go into the subtle world. Hence they remain attached to the earth plane. The natural progression of the soul is delayed until we learn to lose these attachments.

The cycle of reincarnation ends after the soul reaches full maturity and completes all its give and take accounts. This means the soul will still exist but no longer be pulled back to incarnate into a physical body. For example; after we graduate from college we do not have to nor do we wish to re-enroll into primary school. We are well past that point in our soul-life. We can come back only if we wish to teach others.

For the soul who wishes to ascend to the highest spiritual states, reincarnation is to be avoided.

People who have accrued a lot of negative karma go into the hell region of the subtle world for a certain period of time after which they may reincarnate on earth.

We have undergone this cycle of birth and death innumerable number of times. The reason we do not remember it is that these vast memories remain hidden in our subconscious mind.
One may need thousands of births to reach the supreme state of spiritual maturity. We must perform spiritual practice, live righteously and have an abundance of good deeds and the grace of a Spiritual master to attain it.

What can I do to protect myself against ancestors or loved ones who have passed away?

When we repeat the protective chant of Sree Gurudev Datta, a subtle sheath envelops us, protecting us from obstacles caused by our ancestors or departed loved ones.

Problems caused due to departed ancestors are a specific type of spiritual difficulty. Therefore we can successfully overcome them only by applying a specific spiritual remedy. Psychological and physical remedies simply cannot overcome the root cause of the problem and can only at best provide some symptomatic relief. For example, if a person is suffering from skin rash caused by ancestors, relevant medical treatment can at best provide relief but not cure the rash completely or prevent it from occurring again.

As we have mentioned, while some types of problems in life such as addictions or marital disharmony may be a strong indication of troubled ancestors, only a Saint or a Guru (a spiritually evolved guide) can tell with certainty the root cause of a problem. At an intellectual level, we could use two rules of thumb to decide if the cause of the suffering is spiritual in nature:

Addictions may be caused by our departed ancestors

All remedies to solve the problem have failed. This is especially so when the problem should be easily treatable by modern sciences such as a skin rash, chest pain, etc.

A number of family members (e.g. 4 out of 5) are suffering with any of the above mentioned issues simultaneously. (The reason that all the family members get affected is that they all have the same ancestors.)

Research findings also suggest that almost 8 problems of 10 in our life have their root cause in the spiritual realm. Spiritual healing remedies and especially healing chant of ‘Lord Datta’ has been very effective in all these cases suffering from trouble by ancestors or departed family members.
